Rovinj is a city in Croatia situated on the north Adriatic Sea with a population of 14,294 (as of 2011). Istriot, a Romance language once widely spoken in this part of Istria, is still spoken by some of the residents. The town is officially bilingual, Italian and Croatian, hence both town names are official and equal. Originally the peninsula on which the city lies was an island, separated from the mainland by a channel. The latter was filled in 1763. Rovinj Archipelago includes 22 islets of which St. Andrew and St. Catherine are the greatest. Old Town of Rovinj is a very romantic historic core with many monuments from various historical periods. Old Town of Rovinj is the most photographed attraction in Croatia and Southeast Europe. The narrow cobbled alleyways and the small squares which have witnessed the turbulent history of the town are full of medieval, gothic, renaissance, and baroque buildings and terraces. On the northern side, you will find the remains of the walls which used to protect the town’s inhabitants from conquerors and looters. Walking down the old alleys is a very special experience – you will feel like time has stopped and you have returned to the ancient era. Walking in the historical old town, you will find a new surprise at every step. Small churches, monuments, old doors and arches await behind every corner. The main landmark of Old Town is church of st. Euphemia. Rovinj offers a great deal, and more! The hospitality of the locals will remain engrained in your memory
